Fairfield, Iowa – hawthorne direct, the direct response television advertising agency, took home three awards for Sales and Marketing achievements from the 41st International Communications Film & Video Competition Awards (INTERCOM). The Evinrude E-TEC informercial received an INTERCOM Silver Plaque while the AARP Finance and Well Being and World’s Smartest Iron (Oliso) were awarded INTERCOM Certificates of Merit.

Evinrude E-TEC Infomercial Description:
This Infomercial introduces a new and advanced outboard motor from Evinrude that is faster, tougher and needs less maintenance than other leading outboards. The objective was to create a documentary-style long form advertisement that highlights the design advantages of the new Evinrude E-TEC two-stroke engine. It compares the new E-TEC to the competition in head-to-head comparisons including a drag race between the Yamaha and Mercury 225 engines against the 225 E-TEC. The composition features beautiful footage from speeding boats and overhead shots from a helicopter.
AARP Finance & Well Being Two-minute Advertisement Description:
This piece challenged hawthorne to broaden AARP’s target market to include working adults ages 50 to 59, breaking out of the company’s image of only servicing retired persons. The advertisement was focused on getting the most out of life over 50 from a financial perspective. It highlighted the benefits of AARP’s savings services and financial planning for retirement using only a series of highly effective testimonials, voice-overs and graphics. Because of this advertisement, their desired cost per new member was achieved.
World’s Smartest Iron (Oliso) Infomercial Description:
The goal of this infomercial was to introduce a revolutionary iron that makes pressing clothing faster and easier. To achieve this goal, an expert and a skeptic host a show in which they walk the viewer through a series of demonstrations to highlight the Touch & Glide Iron’s benefits and features. Compelling testimonials are also used to emphasize the advantages of the product which includes a design that raises the iron off of the surface once the hand releases it, automatic lowering when the handle is touched again, more powerful steam and increased heat retention on the soleplate. The Touch & Glide infomercial presents the unique characteristics and rewards of the product to the viewer clearly, effectively and persuasively, thereby successfully achieving its goal.
